Chapelcross nuclear power station to be turned into green energy beacon
Iconic nuclear power station, Chapelcross, located near Annan in Scotland, is set to be transformed into a ‘hub for renewable energy’.
Backed by an impressive £15.3 million of combined funding from both the UK and Scottish governments, plans for the former power station - which ceased operating in 2004 after 45 years of service - include developing hydrogen production storage, advanced manufacturing, and energy and enterprise campuses to accelerate the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.
Of the 210 hectares of land taken up by the site, it’s reported that nearly 60 hectares are planned for development, which would position Chapelcross as a ‘regional green growth catalyst’.
According to reports, the site, which is part of the Scottish Government's ‘Hydrogen Action Plan’, boasts strong infrastructure and transport links and it is hoped will stimulate local economic growth and create green energy job opportunities for the region.
And, although completion of the project may be some years away, this is an interesting and positive prospective use for an otherwise disused site - showing great intention in integrating renewable energy projects, not only in the energy market, but also in the job market.
