What We Did
Alternative energy project
demolition of old equipment, cleaning of existing structures
PWCL provided project management and commercial support for the demolition, cleaning, and site-preparation phase of Britannia Metals’ Northfleet battery recycling facility, enabling safe, on-schedule progress toward facility delivery.
Project Background
Britannia Metals engaged in the development of a battery recycling facility in Northfleet, Kent, to process used batteries and reclaim refined components for reuse in new battery production.
The site required significant preparatory works: demolition of old equipment, cleaning of existing structures, and safe handling of contamination - particularly lead - before any building works could proceed under an EPCM contract managed by SLR.
PWCL was brought in to provide project management support focused on these preparatory works.

What we did
PWCL was appointed as Project Manager by SLR to oversee the site clearance and cleaning stages.
Our responsibilities included coordinating demolition and decontamination efforts, managing risks related to hazardous materials, and providing commercial oversight to ensure these early works aligned with the broader facility development objectives.
The facility is being conceived as a process-led recycling plant. While much of the facility’s structure will be built around technological equipment, the initial package focused on preparing the building envelope and site infrastructure.
PWCL’s involvement at these early stages ensures that the base works, civil, structural, and contamination mitigation, meet technical and regulatory standards before process installation begins.
PWCL’s oversight of the site preparation work has helped SLR maintain programme alignment and cost control under challenging conditions, especially with environmental risk. Early successes set the foundation for the larger battery recycling facility, aimed at supporting battery circular economies and industrial reuse of battery components.
